Eurasian Watermilfoil (Milfoil)

According to the Newman Lake Flood Control Zone District's Five Year Plan, the in-lake oxygenation pump is scheduled for removal and inspection in 2012. This project will involve hiring divers for pipe and pump removal, taking the pump to a shop in Spokane for servicing and any needed repairs, with divers being used to reinstall the pipe sections and pump. This process was last completed in the Fall of 2006/Spring of 2007.

Milfoil eradication will continue into 2012 with intensive surveying. The new year also includes training new volunteers and continued efforts of educating the public on the importance of continued water quality for Newman Lake. For more information, please take a few minutes to read the 2011 Winter Newsletter.

Eurasian Watermilfoil (Milfoil)

Scientific name: Myriophyllum spicatum L.

Eurasian watermilfoil was first discovered at Newman Lake in September of 2002 in a small area at the southeast end of Newman Lake near the outlet gate. Eurasian watermilfoil is a non-native highly invasive aquatic weed listed on the state noxious weed list. Beginning in 2003 the Newman Lake Flood Control Zone District (NLFCZD) began implementing control efforts with the assistance of an Early Infestation Grant from Washington State Department of Ecology. A comphrehensive management plan was finalized in October of 2005. To view or download a sections or the complete plan in
